Chat and Chat group exhibition

By Vivian Zhang

This exhibition presented work pieces by nine Belgian and Chinese contemporary artists, ranging from pictures, paintings and installations to video shows. It was a head-on collision of two different cultures, yet people detected something harmonious in it.

Jethro combined death and living in his paintings "2nd Horse of the Apocalypse" and "In the Grip of Evil". It is said in western religion that on doomsday four horses will come representing disease, war, death and hunger respectively. Jethro indicated that his work showed the fear of war deep in people's heart. Whether it had happened or not, the shadow of war will hang forever.

Dong Xing also expressed sharp comparison in his work "Untitled". Stunningly beautiful flowers grew out of frightening scars on the human body, which shocked the audience. Was it a nightmare or just a trick the author played?

As the audience moved around, amazed and eager to understand the art, Zhu Luming, the curator of the "Chat and Chat" project, told the reporter that he was very interested to see what this cooperation would eventually produce. "I think this cooperation mode does not intend to create something new like a form or a shape, rather it hopes to break out of existing work and thought models and create a platform that really allows people to communicate. People will then no longer be confined to their own experience; instead they will exchange their thoughts in order to explore new possibilities and reflect upon these elements of change - as artists." He added, "Perhaps that looks like chaos: everything being in a state of constant flux and mixture. But does order evolve from a state of chaos?"

Nico, from Belgium, also expressed his hope to push this bilateral arts cooperation to a higher level. "We are considering setting up artists' exchange bases both in Xiamen and in Belgium, which accommodate living and working spaces for those artists who would stay for a short period of time and work together with their foreign counterparts." He then disclosed his plan for the near future, "Maybe we can start with working on a joint-magazine first, which will be distributed both in here and back in Belgium."
